Dr. Dean Ornish And His Diet Program
There are many diet and weight loss programs in the market today. However, when Dr. Dean Ornish first introduced his diet program, some people thought he was crazy. That’s not because the diet wouldn’t work, but they reasoned that it was so restrictive that nobody would follow it consistently. But then Dr. Ornish proved that if you do follow his diet, you could actually reverse heart disease and other chronic health problems. A lot of people will follow a very restrictive diet for that reason.
What Exactly is the Ornish Diet?
Actually, Dr. Ornish doesn’t always recommend a restrictive diet. For most people, eating a diet that’s low in saturated fats and high in complex carbohydrates may be just fine. Dr. Ornish believes that some people are genetically programmed to have trouble metabolizing fat and cholesterol. As a result, they have heart disease. Those people will have healthier hearts if they follow these guidelines:
- A vegetarian diet high in complex carbohydrates. Lots of fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes.
- Very low in simple carbohydrates, including sweeteners, white flour and alcohol
- Very low fat-only 10% of calories come from fat. No oil, nuts, avocados. Small amounts of nonfat dairy and egg whites are allowed.
- 3 grams of flaxseed or fish oil a day for omega-3 fatty acids.
Ornish says that the diet is only part of the plan. In addition, you should also do the following:
- Decrease stress. Ornish suggests yoga, breathing exercises, meditation and support groups.
- Get 20-30 minutes of moderate exercise every day.
- Quit smoking if you smoke
- Cultivate friendships, caring, community and intimacy.
The Ornish diet is not a weight loss diet, although most people do lose some weight when implementing the program. The Ornish diet is really a lifestyle plan that reverses heart disease and promotes wellness.
