Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - What Is It?
Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by long-term fatigue. It is not the same as the usual sort of fatigue you get from having a busy week. It’s also not due to lack of a good night’s sleep. Chronic fatigue can keep you from living your life the way you used to.
People who suffer from chronic fatigue may have impaired memory function, joint pain, and muscle pain. These are the similar symptoms as fibromyalgia, which can make a diagnosis difficult. A persistent sore throat can also be a symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome. People who suffer from it also become incredibly tired after exercise, and feel as if they are not going to recover from it.
On top of all the above symptoms, chronic fatigue sufferers might also have a cough, chest pain, blurry or dry eyes, and many allergies. They can also be sensitive to foods, chemicals, or noise. They may suffer from depression or irritability. They may alternate between having symptoms and not having them, making it difficult to diagnose.
Chronic fatigue usually curtails your ability to work, attend school or function in normal everyday life. Some people are able to continue with normal lives, but most have to make adjustments. Normally, if people start managing the illness early they have a fairly good chance of recovering to some degree. Antidepressants, anti-inflammatories, and antihistamines are usually part of the treatment.
