Are Self Tanners A Waste of Money?
One of the biggest wastes of money has to be self tanners. Given our preoccupation with tanned skin and the illusion of time spent outdoors it is no surprise that our store shelves have become overrun with a vast array of self tanners. I for one have never had a good experience with a self tanner. I have a medium skin tone and usually come out with orange tinted skin which is definitely not attractive. I don’t recommend wasting your time and money on self tanners.
If you do not like the color of your skin and want a more sun kissed look, you should get your butt outside and spend some time under the real sun. Tanning beds are a much worse option if you are looking for a fake tan. Please educate your self about the dangers of tanning beds and the harmful effects it can have on your skin before using one. No woman wants to damage her skin and end up looking decades older than she really is when she gets older.
Once upon a time many cultures placed a high value on extremely fair skin. Having such porcelain white skin was an indication that a woman was of high class and did not have to spend much time outside engaging physical labor. Using self tanners would be near sacrilege in those times. In today’s world we idolize women who have enough leisure time to spend their days on a beach.
Most of us have to work all day and this is usually inside. If you spend your summers in an office and rarely get a chance to lie out in the sun, you may think that self tanners are the answer to your pale skin. Unfortunately no matter how much you spend on a self tanner you will not end up with that natural bronze.
Before you waste your time and money on self tanners, ask yourself if having tanned skin really matters all that much. I would argue that it does not. In the grand scheme of things, your skin color should not be that important. If you are being pulled to change your natural self you should think about how far you are willing to take it. It may start with self tanners but will trying to fit in bring you to color your hair, cut your hair, and starve yourself? That is not as big of a leap as it may appear. My general advice is always to embrace yourself for who you are and remember that true beauty comes from the differences between us.
