Taking A Power Nap
A coworker of mine uses her thirty minute lunch break to take a brief power nap. She lays down in the lounge and sets her watch to wake her up in twenty minutes. When her watch beeps and her power nap comes to an end, she gets up and says she feels refreshed and more relaxed. I’ve tried to take a short power nap as well. For me, I wake up feeling groggy and more irritated than I was prior to closing my eyes. I’m not a power nap person, my naps need to be at least an hour.
I read an article recently about power naps and learned that taking a twenty minute power nap in the middle of the day actually provides more energy and rest than sleeping twenty minutes later in the morning. I had a hard time believing that simply because of my experiences with taking a short power nap. I am a huge fan of setting my alarm clock to give me that absolute maximum amount of sleep time in the morning. I won’t get up until I know that I absolutely have to. So, I found that article to be especially interesting. The expert who wrote the article also explained that you should not feel guilty about taking a power nap because it can be very beneficial for you. It helps to relax and clear the mind and ease some of the stress you may be experiencing. People have told me that it doesn’t even matter if you fall asleep or not, as long as your eyes are closed and you are allowing your mind to wander. Let go of the list of things to do for the day or what just happened in a meeting. Allow yourself to escape
from your reality for a few moments.
I just have a hard time doing that. A power nap for me just wasn’t possible. I started to take a book to work and lost myself in the story for about thirty minutes over my lunch breaks. I might not be closing my eyes or catching up on a few moments of sleep, but I am allowing my mind to wander. While my coworker is lounging a few chairs over from me and waiting for her alarm to end her power nap, I am happily losing myself in my book. Everyone has their own ways of escaping reality for a short time throughout the day. Whether it is a power nap or something else, make it a point to escape somehow. You’ll thank yourself for it.
